Let’s get right into it. There are some pretty interesting games on the college football schedule this week as league play starts to ramp up, but there are only a few marquee match-ups. The 23rd ranked Tennessee Volunteers travel down to The Swamp to take on the 24 Florida Gators in an SEC East battle (FLA -5, o/u 49.5) in the SEC Game of the Week. However, THE game of the week has the reigning National Champions and 3rd ranked Clemson Tigers heading north to take on Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson and 14 Louisville Cardinals (CLEM -3.5, o/u 56.5). ESPN’s College Gameday and the Bartstool Sports Tailgate Show will both be in Louisville with celebrity game pickers, drinking mint juleps, eating Kentucky Hot Browns, and probably doing a Pizza Review or two.
I’m not picking those games because there are too many variables. My picks this week are:
New Mexico at Boise State; Boise St. -14.5, o/u 58.5 – The blue turf at Boise’s Albertsons Stadium can be difficult to watch, but New Mexico will look to bounce back from a loss against their rival NM St. as they open Mountain West Conference play against the Broncos. New Mexico’s offense is pretty good with their run pass option attack. It’ll be interesting to see if the Lobos will rally around head coach Bob Davie who is under outside investigation into allegations of player mistreatment and compromised player drug testing. This could prove too much of a distraction for New Mexico but I think last week’s loss, conference opener, and getting over 2 touchdowns will be enough. Plus, in doing my research, the Lobos were 31 pt underdogs in their last trip to Boise and won that game 31-24. Pick: UNM +14.5 for .40 unit
Baylor at Duke; Duke -14, o/u 60 – Matt Rhule is too good of a coach and Baylor has too much talent to be 0-2 after losing to both Liberty and UTSA at home. The pressure is on in Waco and a road trip is probably just what the team needs to bond and get away from the pressure. Duke is 2-0 after strong victories over NC Central (60-7) and Northwestern (41-17), but I’m not totally convinced yet. I like the points. Pick: BAY +14 for .40
Southern Methodist at Texas Christian; TCU -19, o/u 64.5 – Both teams can score, so let’s have an old-fashioned Texas shootout. SMU WR Courtland Sutton is a stud. When it comes to shootouts, I like close games. Pick: SMU +19 for .40 and O 64.5 for .40
Kansas State at Vanderbilt; KSU -3.5, o/u 48.5 – This game wasn’t on my radar at the beginning of the week, but as I was looking at the 3.5 spread I figured it would be worth an extra look. Knowing K-State pretty much always has a solid team under Coach Snyder, and seeing that Wildcats are coming off a solid 9 win 2016 season and have looked pretty good this year going up against a Vanderbilt team who is perennially in the cellar of the SEC, I decided to lay the points. Pick: KSU -3.5 for .40
